Pneumococcal infection can lead to serious illnesses including pneumonia, bacteremia (infection of blood), meningitis (infection of the covering of the brain), and death. Symptoms depend on the type of illness and can include fever, chills, chest pain, headache, weakness, productive cough, rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, and seizures. The disease is caused by a type of bacteria that spread from person to person through close contact.
Although anyone can get pneumococcal disease, children younger than 2 years old and adults older than 65 are at highest risk for serious illness.
